Please note that information in this title is state-specific and is currently only available for Iowa.
Efforts are underway to complete this title for other states.

The Challenge:

It is vital that a new immigrant knows what is expected of him or her on the road. Yet, laws that differ drastically from state-to-state (and from home country laws) make discerning these rules confusing and frustrating for both immigrants and organizations that work with immigrants. Confusion impedes the successful completion of requirements necessary for driving and owning/operating a vehicle in the U.S., such as:

  • Obtaining a license
  • Registering and titling your vehicle
  • Insuring your car
  • Following safety laws
  • Information:

The Transportation video/DVD gives detailed information on applying for a driver’s license and registering a vehicle, explaining state-specific requirements pertinent to immigrants. It also discusses safety topics, and gives a mini English lesson on calling for a taxi. Highlights include:

  • Licensing
    1. Identification requirements
    2. Foreign-born applicants
    3. Non English-speaking applicants
  • Title and Registration
    1. Location and name of state licensing agency
    2. Application process and fees
  • Traffic and Safety Laws
    1. Drunk driving laws
    2. Driver and passenger safety
    3. Child restraint and safety
  • Accident Reporting
    1. Timeframe/reporting agency
    2. injury/non-injury collisions
    3. insurance requirements
  • Tools:

Several federal-level initiatives have resulted in development of transportation resources and tools geared especially for Spanish-speakers. Some focus on specific topics, such as drunk driving or safety belt use, while others provide general education and information about driving, traveling and transportation in the U.S. Some for-profit companies, such as several major insurance companies, also market to Spanish-speaking consumers with Spanish resources and customer assistance. Below is a link to a document listing some of these nationally-available resources and tools. State and local resources are highlighted on the printed resource guide that accompanies each video/DVD.
